A vintage kilim cushion is made from a piece of an older rug, usually several decades old; the colours have softened slightly through use and exposure to light.

Vacuum the cushion from time to time using a soft brush attachment, or give it a good shake. Blot any stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent. Do not put it in the washing machine.

Dust the cushion with a dry, soft cloth. Cactus silk is more sensitive to moisture than wool; avoid wet cleaning, and have any stains treated professionally if necessary.

Cactus silk, also known as sabra, does not – despite its name – come from a cactus, but from the fibres of the agave plant. The fibre is spun by hand and has a natural, subtle sheen.
