Rug size

The right size makes or breaks a rug: if it’s too small, it looks out of place; if chosen well, it ties your furniture together. Measure your seating area or dining table and choose the size below that works best for your space.

About the collection

What size rug do you need?

The right size depends on the room and the furniture around it. Houseify divides the collection into four groups: small for an accent rug or runner, medium for most living rooms and bedrooms, large for a spacious seating area or corner sofa, and round for a specific spot such as under a round dining table.

As each rug is hand-knotted or hand-woven, the actual dimensions will always differ by a few centimetres from the approximate measurements given. The exact measurements are stated for each product, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

The four size groups

Group Formats Typical uses
Small 100×100 to 150×150 cm Accent, next to the bed, children’s bedroom
Medium-sized 160×230 to 250×150 cm Living room or bedroom, small sitting area
Big 200×300 to 300×400 cm Spacious sitting area, corner sofa, dining room
Round 100 to 300 cm in diameter Round dining table, a feature in a corner

How do you measure your room?

First, measure the group of furniture that the rug is intended to cover, not the whole room. For a seating area, measure the sofa and armchairs together; for a bedroom, measure from the edge of the bed.

  • 2- or 3-seater sofa: 160 x 230 cm or 200 x 300 cm.
  • Corner sofa: 240 x 340 cm or 300 x 400 cm.
  • Bedroom: 170 x 240 cm next to or under a double bed.
  • Round dining table: a round tablecloth with a diameter 60 to 90 cm larger than the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

Measure the set of furniture that the rug is to cover, not the whole room. For a seating area, measure the sofa and armchairs together; leave 30 to 50 cm of floor space free all round.

Each rug is hand-knotted or woven on a loom that varies from one maker to another. The dimensions given are an average; the exact measurements are stated for each product.

Small measures up to approximately 150 x 150 cm and serves as an accent piece. Medium-sized, ranging from 160x230 to 250x150 cm, is suitable for most living rooms and bedrooms. Large, from 200x300 cm upwards, is intended for a spacious seating area or corner sofa.

Particularly under a round dining table, or as an accent in a corner where a rectangular rug looks less natural.

Leave 30 to 50 cm of floor space free along the walls, so that the rug does not touch the skirting boards or doors.

Yes, for example, a large rug under the seating area and a smaller rug next to a reading chair. Choose rugs in the same colour family to create a sense of cohesion.

Not necessarily. A rug that’s too big for a small room leaves little of the floor visible and can actually make the room feel more cramped. Choose the size based on the furniture arrangement, not the whole room.

Mark out both sizes on the floor with tape and see which one fits best with the furniture. If in doubt, choose the larger size if the front legs of all the seating furniture fit within it.

Vacuum the rug regularly, following the direction of the pile, on a low setting. Blot stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent.

Yes, to some extent. Larger and smaller standard sizes, such as 150x150 cm, tend to come from Morocco, whilst larger and non-standard sizes are more commonly sourced from Turkey, India and Pakistan. The actual country of origin is stated for each product.

Houseify sells rugs in standard sizes. Please contact customer services if you are looking for a specific, non-standard size.

Choose an anti-slip mat that is slightly smaller than the rug itself, so that the edges of the rug do not curl up and the mat is not visible.
