1. Where our rugs come from
Houseify sells a wide collection of handmade rugs and rugs from countries with a rich tradition in artisan rug weaving:
- Morocco – Berber rugs hand-knotted by weavers in the Atlas Mountains
- Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Turkey – traditionally hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs
- Argentina – handmade wool rugs
- China – machine-made and handmade rugs
Each handmade rug is the work of human hands – a craft passed down through generations.
2. From producer to living room – our chain
Houseify works with intermediaries established in the Netherlands who are in direct contact with the producers. These intermediaries are the responsible market operators under the GPSR (EU 2023/988) and our primary point of contact for product quality, safety, and working conditions.
Our chain:
- Producers / weavers – in the countries of origin above
- Dutch-established intermediaries – importer and responsible EU market operator (GPSR Art. 16)
- Houseify – sells the rugs to consumers in the Netherlands and the EU
We do not disclose supplier names to protect competitively sensitive information. In the event of a serious request in the context of a government inspection or legal dispute, we will cooperate in providing access.
3. Our claims, honestly substantiated
The EmpCo guideline (EU 2024/825, applicable ~September 2026) prohibits vague or unsubstantiated sustainability and origin claims. We already apply this standard prior to its entry into force and only make claims that we can substantiate:
| Claim | Substantiation |
|---|---|
| “Handmade” | Production process documented by country of origin; demonstrably handcrafted |
| “Natural materials” | Fiber composition listed per product (wool, jute, cotton, bamboo silk, viscose, recycled cotton) |
| “Traditional craft” | Documented weaving techniques by region (hand knot, hand weaving) |
We do not use invented quality marks or unbacked certifications.
4. Transparency about what we do not (yet) know
We do not have direct control over every step in the chain. We rely on our Dutch intermediaries as the primary link and expect them to comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct. We are working on further supply chain transparency.
