A plain rug has a solid colour without a pattern. Whilst a geometric rug features lines and shapes, and a classic rug stands out for its medallions and scrollwork, a plain rug really allows the texture and the colour itself to take centre stage. Consider the way light falls on the wool, and the subtle colour variations within a single solid colour created by the hand-knotted or hand-woven structure.
‘Plain’ does not always mean completely flat: in the case of a high-pile plain rug, the pile itself creates texture, and in a hand-woven rug, subtle, natural variations in colour are visible that are not found in a machine-made plain rug. Some products in the collection are categorised as ‘modern’ or ‘Berber’; please check for each product whether the rug falls within this definition of a solid colour.
Prices in the collection range from around €900 to €4,770. The price is determined by a combination of the material, size and knotting technique: a large, hand-knotted woollen rug requires more labour than a small one.
Material and pile height
You can see which type of plain rug suits your room in the table below:
| Type | Appearance | Goes well with |
|---|---|---|
| High-pile, plain | Thick, soft, with a textured surface created by the pile itself | Living room, bedroom |
| Short-pile plain | Flat, sleek, easy to keep clean | Dining room, hall, high-traffic areas |
| Woven plain | Slight variation in texture, no shine | Rural, Scandinavian |
As well as wool, there are also plain rugs made from natural fibres such as jute, with a coarser, matt finish that suits a country-style interior well. If you’re looking for a thick, soft pile, have a look at the high-pile rug. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a thin, flat, low-pile rug, then a plain kilim rug better.
Choose the right plain rug
Start with the area where the rug will be placed and measure the desired area:
- 2- or 3-seater sofa: 160 x 230 cm or 200 x 300 cm.
- Dining table: The tablecloth extends far enough on each side that the chairs remain on the tablecloth when they are pulled out.
- Bedroom: 170 x 240 cm next to or under a double bed.
- Open-plan living area: Use the rug to define an area without making the room look any smaller.
A neutral, plain colour such as grey, beige, taupe or sand allows the furniture to take centre stage and blends easily with various interior styles. A bold colour such as red, green, orange, petrol blue or rust brown makes the rug itself the focal point. A light, plain colour tends to blend into a light-coloured floor; in that case, opt for more contrast or a subtle texture.
Houseify works directly with weavers who knot and weave plain rugs in a variety of materials and pile heights. The exact dimensions, material composition and stock status are listed for each product.

Fast delivery and helpful advice on returning items that were delivered in excess.
I chose a rug that I really liked. Everything was clearly described and the delivery went smoothly and quickly. I’m very happy with my purchase. Thank you!!!
I found a beautiful and unique rug. Friendly customer service. It took a while to arrive, as it had to be shipped from its country of origin. It was well worth the wait. Highly recommended!!
Good, prompt communication and they really think things through with you. Brilliant🤍 and a little gift in the post for writing a review. Which shop still does that these days?!
Good to know
Not always. A plain, deep-pile rug gains depth and visible texture from the pile itself. In a hand-woven plain rug, subtle, natural variations in colour are visible, which a machine-woven rug does not have.
A plain rug has no pattern, just a single colour throughout. A classic rug features a symmetrical pattern with a medallion or scrollwork. With a plain rug, the focus is on the texture and the material; with a classic rug, it is on the motif.
A light, plain-coloured rug shows stains more easily than a patterned one. A darker plain rug or one with subtle textural variation hides dirt better.
The plain rugs in the Houseify collection are hand-knotted or hand-woven. Although they do not feature a pattern, small, natural variations in the wool are visible.
For greater contrast, choose a darker plain rug, or one with a high pile, where the pile itself adds visible texture.
Vacuum the rug regularly, following the direction of the pile, on a low setting. Blot stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent. Leave thorough cleaning to a professional rug cleaner.
For a woollen rug, follow these guidelines: vacuum on a low setting in the direction of the pile, dab stains rather than rub them, and never machine wash. Jute and other natural fibres must not be cleaned with water; it is best to use a dry brush and, for stubborn stains, call in a professional.
A woollen rug may shed a few fibres in the first few weeks, is more susceptible to moisture than synthetic rugs, and is generally more expensive. On the other hand, it has a long lifespan and a natural depth of colour that synthetic materials cannot match.
A well-maintained, hand-knotted woollen rug will last for decades under normal use. Machine-woven and thin kilim rugs have a shorter, but still considerable, lifespan of around ten to twenty years; rotate the rug regularly so that wear is distributed evenly.
Both will work, depending on the layout. Choose a size that will at least accommodate the front legs of the sofa, usually 200x300 cm or larger; a rug that is too small will look out of place and actually make the room appear smaller. For a compact seating area or next to an armchair, a smaller rug measuring 160x230 cm will suffice.
Yes. A plain rug subtly defines a seating area or dining area, without distracting attention from the furniture or any other pattern elsewhere in the room.
Yes, as a neutral base. A plain rug in a subtle colour keeps the room uncluttered and, by creating greater contrast, can help ensure that brightly coloured toys and accessories stand out.
Over the years, dyed wool fades slightly when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. This is more noticeable on a plain rug than on a patterned one, as the rug has no design to distract the eye. Turn the rug half a turn regularly.
That depends on the pile height. A thick, high pile traps air and acts as an insulating layer, meaning heat is less likely to escape into the room. A low-pile, plain rug therefore allows heat to pass through more easily when used with underfloor heating. Thin, low-pile or woven rugs, such as a kilim, are best suited to underfloor heating. Check the specifications for each product to see whether the underfloor heating manufacturer permits the use of rugs.
Wool gives a solid colour the greatest depth thanks to slight natural variations in the fibre. Cotton looks flatter and more uniform, whilst jute has a matt, coarse texture. The exact material composition is listed for every product on Houseify.
On slippery floors such as tiles or parquet, a non-slip mat prevents the rug from sliding. Use a felt or rubber non-slip mat that is slightly smaller than the rug, so that the edges do not curl up; a felt mat protects the floor from wear and tear.
