Azilal rug

About the collection

Patterns and colours

Motif Meaning
Zigzag Water or rivers in the mountains
Diamond Protection or femininity
Cross Connection or balance
Eye Ward against the evil eye

  • 2- or 3-seater sofa: 240x140 cm of 250x160 cm.
  • Large sofa or corner sofa: 275x185 cm of 310x205 cm.

I found a beautiful and unique rug. Friendly customer service. It took a while to arrive, as it had to be shipped from its country of origin. It was well worth the wait. Highly recommended!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

The weaving tradition is passed down from mother to daughter, and each rug reflects the personal style of the Amazigh woman who made it.

The weaver ties wool threads by hand to the warp threads of a vertical loom; the loom keeps the threads taut, but the rug itself is created by knotting, not by weaving. Colour accents are created by incorporating dyed cotton threads into the knotting. A rug takes weeks or even months to complete, depending on its size and the complexity of the pattern.

An Azilal originates from the High Atlas and features colourful, free-form patterns on a light background with a thinner pile. A Beni Ouarain originates from the Middle Atlas, features dark geometric lines on an ivory-white background and a thicker, softer pile. The source of the colour also differs: Azilal weavers use natural dyes such as saffron, henna, cochineal and indigo, sometimes supplemented with dyed cotton threads, whilst a Beni Ouarain is made predominantly from undyed wool.

Both have colourful patterns, but an Azilal combines bold accents on a light base, while a Boujaad mainly uses warm colours such as pink, red and terracotta across the whole rug. A Boujaad often has larger geometric fields, an Azilal more scattered symbols.

Vacuum the rug regularly with a soft brush head on a low setting. Wipe away stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent, as a neutral pH keeps the protein structure of the wool intact. Do not dry the rug in direct sunlight and avoid bleach.

Yes, but a rug blocks some of the heat from the floor. The thinner the pile, the more easily that heat reaches the room; the thinner pile of an Azilal is more effective in this respect than the thicker pile of a Beni Ouarain. You can expect the heat transfer to be lower than on an uncovered floor.

Sheep’s wool is naturally resilient and dirt-repellent, but its lifespan depends mainly on the pile density, usage and maintenance. Rugs in less-trafficked areas wear less than those in a hall. The original price also reflects this. Of the two 240x140 cm rugs, both costing €889.95, one had an original price of €1,112.00 and the other of €1,483.00. A larger size, a more complex pattern and more knotting require more time from the maker.

Yes. Thanks to its thinner pile and lighter weight, an Azilal is suitable for use as a wall hanging. To prevent it from stretching, secure the rug at the top using a wooden slat or fabric hooks, and distribute the weight evenly. This will ensure the rug hangs safely on the wall.

A vintage Azilal is a rug that has been used before, usually twenty years or older. Through use and washing, the colours become softer and the patterns more subtle. Vintage rugs sometimes have worn patches or repairs that are part of the character.

The colourful, playful patterns complement bohemian, eclectic and maximalist interiors. An Azilal rug in muted colours can also serve as an accent piece in a Scandinavian or minimalist interior.

Yes, on smooth floors. To prevent the edges from curling up, use a non-slip mat made of felt or rubber that is slightly smaller than the rug. The mat keeps the rug in place, so that it doesn’t slip and wear against the floor along the edges.
