What size rug will suit your room?

The right size makes all the difference. Select your space and see straight away which size is suitable – including a floor plan for each layout.

Living room

Living room rugs

The foundation of a good seating area is the rug. The right size ties the sofa, chairs and coffee table together as a single unit. As a rule of thumb: the front legs of the sofa should rest on the rug, and the rug should extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the sofa on all sides. If in doubt, always go for a larger size.

Dining room rugs

In the dining room, the rug determines the size of the dining area. The rug must be large enough to ensure that the chairs remain on it, even when you pull them out. Allow at least 60 cm of extra space around the table top, in all directions.

Bedroom rugs

A rug in the bedroom adds warmth at the times that matter most – when you get up and when you go to bed. Tuck two-thirds of the rug at the foot of the bed under the bed, so that it extends about 60 cm at the sides and the foot of the bed.

Taking measurements

How to measure your room

1

Focus on the space, not the room

Measure the area the rug needs to cover: the seating area, the dining area or the area around the bed. The room’s dimensions alone are not very helpful.

2

Mark out the measurement with tape

Mark out the desired rug size on the floor using masking tape. You’ll then be able to see straight away whether the size fits in with your furniture and walking routes.

3

Keep the floor clear of obstacles

Leave 15 to 45 cm of floor visible between the edge of the rug and the wall. This frames the rug and keeps the room in balance.

Vintage rugs: every piece is unique

Many of our rugs are handmade and vintage. As a result, their dimensions are just as unique as the rug itself: a Berber rug measuring 226 × 155 cm is a one-off. Measure your space first and then filter by size, rather than looking for an exact standard size.

In the size guide, you can use the size filter to search by length and width – this way, you can find any rug that fits your measurements.
