Description

The kilim rug woven in culture. The story of the original handmade kilim.

Our kilim rug is a flat hand-woven, of Eastern origin. It is probably the earliest known form of rug art. The name ‘Kelim’ is Turkish and derives from the Persian word ‘gelim’ (گلیم).

The kilim technique has traditionally been practised in Anatolia, the Caucasus and North Africa. Our kilims are hand-woven in Morocco.

The special thing about the kilim weaving technique is that the patterns are usually the same on both sides, so there is no front or back. A kilim can be used as a floor or wall rug.. The most commonly used material for kilim patterns is wool, and cotton is used for the warp threads. The traditionally used colors are red, pink, ivory, blue, and green.

History of the kilim rug.

Net als pooltapijten wordt het kelimtapijt al sinds de oudheid geproduceerd.

Weaving technique

Diagram of the kilim slit weaving technique, showing how the weft threads of each color are rewound from the color boundary, creating a slit.

Kilim fabrics are manufactured by closely interweaving the warp and weft threads of the fabric to create a flat, pileless surface. Kilim fabrics are rug fabrics, technically woven flat with weft faces, meaning that the horizontal weft threads are pulled tightly downwards to conceal the vertical warp threads.

Kelim rug - four different sizes available 170x240cm, 200x250cm, 200x300cm and 250x300cm.

Please note: the rugs are handmade and are therefore never exactly the same size (for example, a rug is 242x177 instead of 240x170).

Pure new wool is naturally dirt-repellent and resilient, and is washed and carded rather than chemically softened, which keeps the fibre elastic and ensures the rug will last for years.

I found a beautiful and unique rug. Friendly customer service. It took a while to arrive, as it had to be shipped from its country of origin. It was well worth the wait. Highly recommended!!

Maintenance

With proper care, your multicolor Meriem Kelim rug will last for years. Keep it simple:

  • Vacuuming once a week with a smooth nozzle and no rotating brush.
  • Blot stains immediately using a clean, slightly damp cloth, and never rub.
  • A few times a year to ensure even wear.
  • Avoid: harsh cleaning products and prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.

Material recommendations

  • Wool: naturally stain-resistant and hard-wearing; regular vacuuming is usually sufficient, and stains can be easily dabbed away.

This is how you keep the colors and fibers of your multicolor Meriem Kelim rug in optimal condition for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

Most of the rugs in this collection are made from 100% pure wool and are hand-knotted or hand-woven. Slight variations in thread thickness and symmetry are characteristic of handcrafted items.

Two to three colours with sufficient contrast make the pattern stand out clearly. A fine grid in muted colours creates a sense of calm; large shapes in contrasting colours produce a graphic, striking effect.

Vacuum the rug regularly, following the direction of the pile, on a low setting. Blot stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent. Leave thorough cleaning to a professional rug cleaner.

Generally speaking, yes: the clean, functional lines of mid-century furniture complement a repeating geometric pattern well.

Yes, if the patterns vary in scale: combine a large rug pattern with smaller geometric cushions or curtains. Make sure the colours coordinate so that the overall effect isn’t too busy.

Over the years, dyed wool will fade slightly when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. Turn the rug half a turn regularly to ensure the colours remain even.

That depends on the thickness. A flat-woven geometric rug, such as a kilim, allows heat to pass through easily; a thickly knotted rug retains more heat. Check the specifications for each product to see whether the underfloor heating manufacturer permits the use of rugs.

Yes. The bold shapes and colour contrasts often appeal to children.

Use a non-slip mat made of felt or rubber that is slightly smaller than the rug, so that the edges do not curl up. A non-slip mat prevents the rug from sliding on smooth floors and protects the floor from wear and tear.
