How to keep your rug looking good for years to come
A beautiful rug deserves good care. With a regular cleaning routine, prompt action when stains occur, and the right approach for each material, your rug will remain soft, colourfast and full of character for years to come.
The basics: four core habits
Most maintenance involves small, regular tasks. If you carry out these four tasks consistently, you’ll prevent the majority of wear and tear and stains.
Vacuum regularly
Vacuum weekly, and more often on high-traffic areas. Use a low suction setting and the smooth nozzle without a rotating brush, as this can pull at the fibres. Vacuum in the direction of the pile.
Every season
Turn your rug around halfway a few times a year. This helps to distribute wear from foot traffic and the effects of sunlight evenly, ensuring the colour remains just as vibrant all over.
Place a non-slip mat
An underlay keeps the rug in place, absorbs impact and allows air to circulate. This prevents the rug from shifting, creasing and premature wear on the underside.
Limit exposure to bright sunlight
Direct, strong sunlight will eventually cause any natural colour to fade. Filter out the strongest light using a sheer curtain or blind, and rotate the rug regularly to ensure an even finish.
Spilled something? Follow these four steps
Accidents happen – and they’re usually not as bad as they seem. The key is to act quickly and gently. Follow this step-by-step guide as soon as something is spilled.
Trade now
The quicker you act, the better the chance that no stain will remain. First, carefully lift any solid bits off with a spoon, working from the outer edge towards the centre.
Never dab or rub
Blot up the moisture with a clean, white cloth or kitchen paper. Rubbing will actually push the stain deeper into the fibres and damage the pile. Always work from the outside in.
Mild soap solution
Does water alone not work? If so, mix one drop of washing-up liquid with half a litre of lukewarm water. Never use hot water – this can actually set some stains. Test on an inconspicuous area first.
Pat dry
Wipe the soap off with a cloth dampened with clean water, then press out any remaining moisture with a dry towel. Leave it to dry thoroughly before walking on it again, using a fan if necessary.
You’d be better off not doing that
- Rubbing or scrubbing – this damages the pile and spreads the stain.
- Using hot water – that actually sets protein and sugar stains.
- Bleach or harsh cleaning products – these can cause the fibres to fade.
- Soak the rug – work with as little moisture as possible, especially with viscose.

Wool
Resilient & stain-resistantWool has a natural protective layer that repels dirt, so you often have a bit of time before you need to do anything. Vacuum using suction only to minimise lint. You can push loose loops back into place and trim protruding threads with scissors at pile height – never pull on them.

Cotton
Lightweight & low-maintenanceThey are hard-wearing and wonderfully light. Smaller, flat-woven cotton rugs can often be simply shaken out. Check the care label: some can be machine-washed on a low spin cycle, whilst others are best washed by hand.

Cactus silk (sabra)
Silky soft & delicatePlant-based silk with a beautiful sheen, but sensitive to moisture and friction. Use as little water as possible and dab very gently. For larger or darker stains, it is best to consult a specialist; incorrect cleaning can quickly lead to rings or stiff patches.

Jute & natural fibres
Cool & naturalThey don’t like too much water: this can cause discolouration and leave marks. Remove stains as dry as possible, preferably using a powder cleaner, and allow any wet areas to dry thoroughly using a fan. Strands and loose fibres are normal and can be trimmed off.

Leather
Sturdy & cosyNever clean leather furniture with water or leave it to soak. Dust it with a dry or slightly damp cloth, then rub it dry. Keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent it from drying out. Gently dab any stains, without rubbing.

Unique & preciousOur vintage rugs have often been through a lot – please treat them with care. Vacuum gently, rotate them regularly and have them thoroughly cleaned by a specialist. Slight wear and variations in colour are part of their character.

No. Loose fibres on the surface are quite normal with new woollen and handmade rugs. This will subside naturally as you use the rug and vacuum it gently. The pilling does not indicate anything about the quality or lifespan.
Footmarks are inevitable. Move heavy furniture a few centimetres every now and then and use felt pads. You can restore a flattened area by brushing the pile with a fine comb, perhaps using a little steam from a distance.
Natural fibres gradually fade when exposed to strong daylight and UV light. Block out the brightest sunlight and rotate the rug regularly to ensure it remains even in colour rather than becoming lighter in one spot.
A fresh, musty smell is normal with a new rug. Leave it out in the open for a few days in a well-ventilated place, and the smell will disappear on its own.
Gently push any loose loops back into the fabric. Use sharp scissors to trim any protruding threads flush with the pile. Never pull on them, as this will cause the whole loop to come loose.
For a thorough clean, a stubborn or large stain, or for delicate fabrics such as viscose and vintage items. A professional clean once a year will keep a beautiful rug looking fresh for years to come.
