About the collection

What is a round rug?

A round rug is circular in shape rather than the usual rectangle. The Houseify collection features round rugs from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China; there are no round Moroccan Berber rugs. There is a technical reason for this: a Berber rug is knotted on a fixed, rectangular loom, which naturally produces rectangular pieces. A round shape is usually created using tufting, a different technique whereby yarn is shot through a stretched fabric using a gun; this is a common production method in India and Pakistan.

A round tablecloth softens the sharp corners of a rectangular room and is a natural fit for a round dining table, whereas a rectangular tablecloth would look less natural.

How do you choose the right round rug?

For a round dining table, choose a tablecloth with a diameter that is 60 to 90 cm larger than the table itself, so that the chairs remain on the tablecloth even when pulled out.

  • Round table for 4 people: approximately 180 to 200 cm in diameter.
  • Round table for 6 people: approximately 220 to 250 cm in diameter.
  • A feature in a corner: 100 to 150 cm, without any specific furniture around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

A Berber rug is knotted on a fixed, rectangular loom, which naturally produces rectangular pieces. A circular shape does not fit well with this technique.

Most round rugs are tufted: yarn is shot through a stretched fabric using a tufting gun, rather than being knotted on a loom. This makes a round shape technically possible.

Choose a tablecloth that is 60 to 90 cm wider than the table, so that the chairs remain on the tablecloth even when they are pulled out.

The round rugs in the Houseify collection are hand-tufted by craftspeople in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, using a different technique to that used for knotting a Berber rug.

Yes. A round rug actually softens the sharp corners of a rectangular room and works well as a contrast to a straight sofa or table.

Centre the rug under the table or piece of furniture it is to be placed beneath, ensuring it is an equal distance from the edges on all sides.

Vacuum the rug regularly, following the direction of the pile, on a low setting. Blot stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent.

The price varies depending on the product, material and origin. The current price is shown for each product; the production method is a factor in this.

That depends on the thickness and pile. The thickness is stated for each product; a thinner rug allows heat to pass through more easily than one with a thick pile.

Yes, as an accent piece next to an armchair or under a round side table. A round rug creates a softer look in a corner than a rectangular rug with sharp edges.

A tufted rug is made using a template, but slight variations in the edge may still occur. The exact measured diameter is stated for each product.

Use a round non-slip mat that is slightly smaller than the rug, so that the edge of the rug doesn’t lift up.
