Rug 120x170

A 120 x 170 cm rug is a compact size for smaller spaces: perfect for in front of the sofa, in a dining area for two, or next to the bed. Large enough to anchor a space, small enough not to overwhelm it. As each rug is hand-knotted or hand-woven, the actual size may vary by a few centimetres from the stated approximate size; the exact measured dimensions are listed for each product. About the collection

What is this format?

A 120x170 cm rug is a compact rectangular size. Of all the small sizes, this size offers the widest range of styles in our collection: Turkish, Indian, Pakistani, Persian and Moroccan. Think of Beni Ouarain (a Moroccan Berber style), Kelim (flat-woven), Gabbeh, Oushak and Persian rugs. It works well as an accent rug next to a bed, in a small hallway or as a standalone feature in a larger room.

Prices range from €535.50 to €1,755.00. This difference is due to the rug’s origin and the technique used: hand-knotted rugs require more work than hand-woven rugs and are therefore more expensive. In a hand-knotted rug, the threads are secured into the framework knot by knot, resulting in a denser, more durable and thicker rug; with a hand-woven rug (such as a Kelim), threads are woven over and through one another, resulting in a flatter and thinner rug. As each rug is made by hand on a loom that varies from maker to maker, the actual size may differ by a few centimetres from the stated approximate size; the exact measured dimensions are listed with each product.

Where would this rug look good?

A rug measuring 120 x 170 cm will fit next to the bed, in a small hallway and in a reading corner. Measure the space and leave some floor space free on each side. When placing the rug next to a bed, let it extend 30 to 50 cm beyond the mattress on the side where you get in, running the length of the bed. The table below shows the placement options:

Place Placement
Next to the bed Along the length, on the side where you get in, 30 to 50 cm beyond the mattress
Small hall As a runner or accent piece by the front door
Reading corner Under an armchair with a side table

I found a beautiful and unique rug. Friendly customer service. It took a while to arrive, as it had to be shipped from its country of origin. It was well worth the wait. Highly recommended!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

Turkey, India, Pakistan, the Persian tradition and Morocco are all represented. Within our range, this is the size that offers the widest variety of traditions amongst the smaller sizes.

The terms are often used interchangeably. A rug is the general term for a textile floor covering; a rug is a loose, movable type of rug that lies freely on the floor. This page therefore refers exclusively to loose rugs, not to fitted rugs.

Common standard sizes are 160x230, 200x300 and 240x340 cm. 120 x 170 cm is one of the smaller standard sizes and the ideal size for an accent rug: next to the bed, in a small hallway or to define a reading corner. For a living room or dining area with a large table, a larger size is usually better.

In this size, you’ll mainly find low-pile rugs such as Kelim and Persian rugs, complemented by medium-pile Berber rugs such as Beni Ouarain. High-pile rugs or shaggy rugs are less common in this size, as the compact dimensions actually call for a flatter profile. The materials used here are predominantly pure wool; you’ll find jute rugs or velour rugs in our wider rug collection.

Yes, as a footboard rug on one side of the bed. If you’d like a wool rug underfoot on both sides, place a rug of this size on each side.

Yes, in a short hallway or entrance hall. For a longer hallway, the rug should still be short; in that case, lay two rugs end to end or choose a longer size.

Rugs are hand-knotted or woven on a loom that varies from one maker to another. Hand-knotted rugs are built up knot by knot, whilst hand-woven rugs are made as a flat weave. As a result, the exact dimensions vary from rug to rug. The measured dimensions are stated for each product.

Unroll the rug, roll it up slightly against the grain and lay it flat again. For the first few days, place something heavy on any corners that are curling up.

No. Wash a rug of this size by hand in lukewarm water using a pH-neutral wool detergent, rinse thoroughly and lay it flat to dry.

Turkish, Indian, Pakistani and Persian rugs are the most common, alongside Moroccan Berber rugs.

Choose rugs from the same colour family but with different patterns, and make sure they do not overlap. A small rug defines a separate area.

Yes. Wool is soft and resilient, and a small item is easy to move around and clean.

Vacuum the rug regularly using a soft brush attachment on a low setting, and shake it out outdoors from time to time. Blot any stains straight away using a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent.

On a floor suitable for underfloor heating, a small rug leaves most of the floor uncovered, so the heat output in the room remains virtually unchanged.

A small rug weighs less and has less surface area in contact with the floor than a large rug, which means it is more likely to slip, especially on a hard floor. Use a non-slip mat made of felt or rubber that is slightly smaller than the rug.
