Kilim cushions

A kilim cushion is made from flat-woven, hand-woven kilim fabric – often repurposed from an older rug – featuring geometric patterns in vibrant colours. That flat weave and the graphic motifs instantly add colour and character to a sofa or chair. Choose your kilim cushion from the collection.

About the collection

What is it?

A kilim cushion is made from flat-woven kilim fabric, often taken from an older rug that is no longer suitable for use as a floor rug, but from which the parts that are still intact are reused. As each piece of fabric comes from a different rug, every kilim cushion is unique in terms of pattern and colour. No two are ever exactly the same.

The flat, dense weave gives the cushion a graphic, minimalist look. A thick, woolly Berber cushion usually has an ivory-white base with dark lines, giving it a different appearance. Geometric patterns and rich colours are characteristic of kilims.

Features

The main characteristics of a kilim cushion are set out in the following table:

Feature Details
Material Plain-woven wool, sometimes with a cotton backing
Origin of the fabric Often made from an old, worn-out kilim rug
Cartridge Geometric, rarely identical from one cushion to the next

Choose the right kilim cushion

As every kilim cushion is unique, please check the product photos for the exact item when choosing this type. A kilim cushion works well as a splash of colour amongst plain cushions, or when paired with a second kilim cushion in the same colour family.

  • Sofa: combine one or two kilim cushions with plain ones in the living room.
  • Chair: one kilim cushion as a focal point.
  • Bed: on top of the bed linen in the bedroom, as a splash of colour.
  • With a rug: a Moroccan kilim rug shares the flat-woven, graphic style of the cushion, so that the pattern and colour complement each other. If you’d prefer a contrast, choose a rug with a different texture to the flat kilim weave.

Why order from Houseify?

Houseify works directly with Moroccan craftspeople who repurpose kilim fabric into unique cushions. The exact dimensions, material composition and stock status are listed for each cushion. Prices range from €48.95 to €249.54. This difference is mainly due to the size (43x43 cm or 60x30 cm) and the age of the fabric used, as vintage pieces are made from fabric that is usually several decades old.

I found a beautiful and unique rug. Friendly customer service. It took a while to arrive, as it had to be shipped from its country of origin. It was well worth the wait. Highly recommended!!

Good, prompt communication and they really think things through with you. Brilliant🤍 and a little gift in the post for writing a review. Which shop still does that these days?!

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

Many kilim cushions are made from pieces of an older, worn rug that is no longer suitable for use as a floor rug. As a result, each cushion is unique and cannot be reproduced exactly.

Each product on Houseify states whether the cushion is filled or is just a cushion cover. If you want to know whether the cushion is filled, please check the product details before you order.

Vacuum the cushion occasionally using a soft brush attachment, or give it a good shake. Blot stains immediately with cold water and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent. Warm water can cause the dye to run. Do not leave the cushion in direct sunlight for long periods, as the colours may fade over the years if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

A cushion made from an older, already washed piece of fabric is generally less likely to run than a newly dyed piece, as newly dyed fabric still contains residual dye in the fibres. If in doubt, test it first on an inconspicuous area using a damp white cloth.

No. Wool is not resistant to rain and damp outdoor air. Use the cushion indoors or on a covered terrace.

Yes. The graphic, geometric patterns of a kilim cushion work well as an accent against sleek, modern furniture.

In this collection of kilim cushions, 43x43 cm and 60x30 cm are the most common sizes. The rectangular shape is a result of the fabric’s origin: the size is determined by the parts of an older rug that are still intact.

Yes, as long as the colours are from the same colour family. Because each cushion is unique, this naturally creates a varied, eclectic look rather than a matching set.

A vintage kilim cushion is made from an older piece of fabric, usually several decades old. The colours have become softer and more nuanced as a result of wear and exposure to light.
