What is a beige rug?
A beige rug has a warm, sandy to light brown hue. In hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs, the beige colour often comes from the natural colour of undyed sheep’s wool, which naturally ranges from ivory to sandy. Where dyeing is used, the beige colour is achieved using vegetable dyes such as walnut husks, or synthetic dyes for a more even shade.
Beige softens contrasts and complements virtually any type of wood, from light oak to dark walnut. It is therefore one of the most commonly used base colours in the Houseify collection, featuring in almost every weaving tradition.

How do you choose the right beige rug?
Start with the area where the rug will be placed and measure the desired area:
- 2- or 3-seater sofa: 160 x 230 cm or 200 x 300 cm.
- Dining table: The tablecloth extends far enough on each side that the chairs remain on the tablecloth when they are pulled out.
- Bedroom: 170 x 240 cm next to or under a double bed.
- Hall or passageway: a smaller rug or runner, with a clear path to walk along.
A plain beige rug tends to blend into a light oak floor; in this case, choose a beige rug with dark lines or a pattern. On dark wood, tiles or concrete, however, a plain beige rug actually adds light and warmth.

Vacuum the rug regularly, following the direction of the pile, on a low setting. Blot stains immediately with a damp cloth and a drop of pH-neutral wool detergent, as a neutral pH leaves the wool fibres intact.
Many vintage rugs have turned beige through wear and tear, washing and sunlight, whilst they once had a lighter or different shade. Signs of wear or repairs are part of their character.
Use a light-coloured non-slip mat made of felt or rubber that is slightly smaller than the rug, so that the edges do not curl up and a dark mat does not show through.
