How to recognize the weaving process from the back
Turn a rug over. The back tells more about the production method than the front ever can.
With a hand-knotted rug, you see the individual nodes: small bundles of wool, each individually wrapped around two warp threads. They are visible in rows, with the weft threads in between. The rows are not perfectly straight: they run slightly wavy, and the knots show minimal variations. This is normal and expected. A precisely identical, smooth reverse side indicates machine production.
Also pay attention to the warp wires yourself. In handmade items, they run continuously from top to bottom through the entire rug; the fringes are their ends. In machine production or cheaper handmade imitations, fringes are sometimes sewn or glued separately to a jute or latex backing. Feel the transition between the fringe and the rug edge: is there a seam, or does the thread run seamlessly?
The pattern reflection is a third indicator. In a hand-knotted rug, the back mirrors the pattern of the front, less sharply but recognizably. The color blocks that you see as a pattern on the front are visible on the back as knot groups of the same color. In a machine-made rug using printing technology, the back is blank or illegible.
