Berber Rug

A Berber rug is a hand-knotted wool rug from the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, woven by the Amazigh, the indigenous Berber people of North Africa. No two rugs are alike: the dense wool knots make it soft, warm, and beautiful for years, and the weaver chose each pattern herself. Whether you are looking for an ivory white Beni Ouarain or a colorful Azilal, find your size, style, and color below.

I bought a beautiful Berber rug from Houseify. The delivery took a bit of doing, but everything worked out in the end and I was compensated with a small gift. I dealt with the logistics planner, who was very customer-friendly. I’d definitely recommend them 👍. I’m very satisfied, anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

Based on three things. Turn the rug over: with handmade work, you see the individual knots on the back, not one uniformly woven surface. The fringes are an extension of the fabric itself, not sewn on afterwards. And thanks to natural lanolin, the wool has a slightly oily, lively texture that you do not feel in polyester imitations. Slight irregularities in the pattern are not a flaw, but proof that a human made it.

A Beni Ouarain has an ivory white base with subtle black diamond or check patterns and a high, soft pile; it is timeless and minimalist. An Azilal comes from the High Atlas and is, on the other hand, expressive: an ivory base with colorful, free patterns in which each rug tells its own story. Beni Ouarain suits sleek and modern styles, while Azilal suits bohemian and eclectic styles.

For a 3-seater sofa, 200×300 cm is the standard: the front legs of your furniture will then rest just on the rug. For a corner sofa or large dining table, 240×340 cm or 300×400 cm works better. In the bedroom, 170×240 cm suffices next to a double bed; in the hallway, choose a runner or a size up to 150×200 cm.

Yes. Wool conducts heat well and is suitable for underfloor heating, as long as you build up the temperature gradually and do not set it to extremely high. The pile provides slight insulation, so it takes a little longer for the heat to come through, but once it does, the rug retains the heat beautifully.

With proper care, decades. Atlas wool is naturally strong and resilient, and because the fringes and knots are part of the weave, nothing comes loose. Many Berber rugs last a generation or longer and become more beautiful with age: the color becomes richer and the pile softer.

Vacuum weekly without a rotating brush, preferably in the direction of the pile. Turn the rug over occasionally so that wear is distributed evenly. Dab a stain immediately with a damp cloth; never rub. Do not wash in a washing machine; for deep cleaning, hire a laundry service experienced in hand-knotted wool.

Orders are processed within 1–2 business days and then delivered in 4–8 days, or 5–10 business days at the latest. For our two own Berber rugs, the following applies: ordered before 17:00, shipped the same day. You will always receive track & trace.

You can return within 30 days of receipt, from any country and without any hassle, as long as the product is unused and in its original condition. Email info@houseify.com and we will assist you quickly and personally.

About the collection

Handmade Berber rugs from the Moroccan Atlas

A Berber rug is a family of hand-knotted rugs, woven by the Amazigh in the Atlas Mountains from Morocco. It is a craft that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations: every region has its own style, pattern, and color palette. The Berber tribes The Atlas's have become the most internationally renowned, and their work forms the basis of our collection. No rug is a copy of another — you are buying a unique, handmade piece.

How do you recognize a real Berber rug?

The difference between an authentic hand-knotted rug and a machine-made imitation lies in the details, and if you know what to look for, you see it immediately.

Turn the rug over. With handmade rugs, you can see the individual knots on the back, where the pattern from the front shows through. A machine-made rug has a smooth, flat underside, often with a latex layer.

Look at the fringes. In a genuine Berber rug, the fringes extend from the weave itself; they are the warp threads. In imitations, they are sewn on separately or glued on.

Feel the wool. Atlas wool contains natural lanolin, giving the fiber a slightly oily, lively texture and naturally repelling dirt. Polyester feels smooth and sterile.

Look for the irregularity. A slightly crooked line or a shifting color nuance is not a flaw but a signature: proof that a weaver made this rug knot by knot. A perfectly symmetrical pattern, on the other hand, betrays a machine.

Moreover, Atlas wool is naturally hypoallergenic and breathable, making a Berber rug a safe choice for the bedroom or children's room as well.

Which size Berber rug fits in your space?

A Berber rug works best when it visually brings your seating area together. The rule of thumb: the front legs of your sofa and armchairs rest on the rug.

  • 3-seater sofa: 200×300 cm is the standard choice.
  • Corner sofa or large dining set: 240×340 cm or 300×400 cm.
  • Bedroom: 170×240 cm next to a double bed, or two runners on either side.
  • Hall or kitchen: a runner or a size up to 150×200 cm.

A Berber piece always imposes something of itself on the space. The natural tones and geometric patterns call for calm furniture surrounding them — or conversely, an interior that can handle that contrast.

Berber rug in your interior style

Bohemian. A colorful Azilal or Boujaad is in its element here. Combine with natural materials, plants, and layered textiles.

Minimalist & Scandinavian. An ivory white Beni Ouarain with a subtle diamond pattern adds warmth to a sleek interior without making it busy.

Japandi. The combination of Japanese simplicity and natural wool works surprisingly well: choose a Beni Ouarain in neutral tones with light wood and low furniture.

Classic & mid-century. A Beni Mguild in warm red and aubergine tones pairs with vintage furniture and wooden floors.

How to maintain a wool Berber rug

Wool is naturally dirt-repellent due to the lanolin in the fiber — dust and sand slide off more easily than on synthetic rugs. Vacuum weekly with a flat nozzle, without a rotating brush, preferably in the direction of the pile. Turn the rug over occasionally so that wear is distributed evenly.

In case of a stain: dab immediately with a damp cloth; never rub. If necessary, use a stain remover spray suitable for wool. For deep cleaning, engage a specialized rug restorer or laundry service with experience in hand-knotted wool — do not put it in the washing machine. An anti-slip backing extends the lifespan and keeps the rug in place.

A well-maintained Berber rug ages beautifully: the color becomes richer, the pile softer, and the rug acquires character that a new rug never has.
