What is a kilim rug?

Do you want to change your interior and are you looking for a real eye-catcher in your living room? A beautiful rug gives your home a completely different look and creates a pleasant atmosphere in your home. Kilim rugs are a good example of this.

Kilim carpets

A kilim carpet is based on the traditional oriental method of making carpets. They are hand-woven thin carpets without pile. Characteristic of these carpets is that they have different patterns, which also have their origins in the oriental world. Kelim is a Turkish name and comes from the Persian gelim (گلیم). The main areas of origin are: Shiraz, Senné and Bidzjar in Iran and Anatolia.

The carpets are woven on looms and the yarn is usually wool. This gives a very detailed and beautiful design. The carpets are about three millimeters thick and are light and easy to maintain.

Kelim: thin, light and easy to store

A great advantage of kilim rugs is that they have a summery look and are thin and light, making them easy to roll up and store.

You can place a kilim rug in your living room or under your dining table during the summer months, and then roll it up and replace it with another rug during the colder months.

A good example are kilim rugs, which are multifunctional. A kilim can be used as a floor or wall carpet.

Different patterns in the kilim carpets

These kilims come in different patterns, colours and sizes. The early manufacturers of kilim carpets incorporated different figures and motifs into the carpets, which often had a deeper meaning. The contemporary kilim carpets are particularly beautiful to look at and are a real asset to your interior due to the different colours and patterns. For example, there are carpets with patchwork, where different pieces of carpet are put together and each piece has a different pattern. The carpets are suitable for both a classic interior and for a more industrial look or a vintage interior.

Onderhoud

With proper care, a Kelim rug | Oriental carpet | will last for decades. Below you will find our maintenance guidelines.

Daily maintenance

  • Vacuum weekly using suction power only. Avoid beating brushes or rotating brushes, which can damage the fibers.
  • Turn the rug over for a few hours once a month so that trapped dust can fall out.
  • Shake or beat the rug outside occasionally to fluff the pile and remove dust.

Removing stains

  • Blot up spilled liquid immediately with a clean cloth. Never rub, and work from the outside in.
  • For light stains, cold water on a damp cloth is usually sufficient.
  • For more stubborn stains, you can use a wool-safe cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.
  • Avoid hydrogen peroxide and bleach, as these can discolor and damage wool fibers.

Thorough cleaning

  • Clean the rug thoroughly approximately every 6 months, more often in areas with heavy foot traffic.
  • Steam cleaning is possible, provided you do not soak the rug. Let it dry completely before walking on it.
  • For valuable or handmade woolen Berber rugs, professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months is safest.

Prevention

  • Keep the rug out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration.
  • Tackle loose threads early. Cut them off, do not pull them.
  • Turn the rug over occasionally for even wear.
