A low-pile rug has a short, dense pile or no pile at all, resulting in a flat, firm surface. In a knotted low-pile rug, the pile is cut short; in a flat-woven kilim, the flat structure is achieved by not adding any pile at all. A kilim is therefore, by definition, flat-woven without a pile, whilst \u2018low-pile\u2019 is the broader term that also encompasses knotted rugs with a short-cut pile. Both techniques produce a rug that looks sleek and is easy to keep clean.<\/p>\n

Most of the rugs in this collection are woven from 100% pure wool, sometimes dyed. Wool feels warm and regulates moisture, and a short pile \u2013 or no pile at all \u2013 allows the surface to be felt more directly. The material also determines how it should be cared for: wool should be washed with a pH-neutral wool detergent, and dyed wool may gradually change colour when exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.<\/p>\n

A short-pile rug traps less dust and sand than a long-pile one. That is the main advantage of short-pile rugs: they work well under a dining table or in a hall. Place the rug on a hard, level surface with a non-slip mat, so that chairs can still slide easily.<\/p>\n\n

Choosing the right rug<\/h2>\n

Start with the area where the rug will be placed and measure the desired area:<\/p>\n

  • Hall or corridor:<\/strong> a runner that is narrower than the hall, with clear floor space on both sides.<\/li>\n
  • Living room:<\/strong> 200 x 300 cm beneath the seating area, with the front legs of the sofa resting on the rug.<\/li>\n
  • Underfloor heating:<\/strong> Compared with a deep-pile rug, a thin, flat-woven kilim retains less heat and therefore allows more heat from the underfloor heating to pass through.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A low-pile rug is the practical choice if you have children or pets. For extra comfort in a quiet room, a high-pile rug is a better choice.<\/p>\n\n
