The colour of a rug largely determines the atmosphere of a room. A warm shade such as beige, brown or red makes a room cosy and grounded. A cool shade such as grey, blue or white, on the other hand, creates a sense of calm and space. In the case of hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs, the colour comes from vegetable or synthetic dyes applied to wool, or from the natural, undyed hue of the fibre itself.<\/p>\n

As well as the colour itself, undertones and saturation play a part: a warm grey with brown in it looks different from a cool grey with blue in it, and a muted shade has a more calming effect than a bright one.<\/p>\n\n
