Step 1: determine the size

Measuring is the foundation. Yet most people don't do it, and that is the cause of the majority of returns.

Living room. Measure the seating area as a whole, not just the floor that is currently visible. The rule of thumb: all front legs of the sofa and armchairs rest on the rug, or all legs stand outside of it. Floating furniture, where only the back legs rest on the rug, looks unsettling and feels unstable. For an average three-seater sofa with a matching armchair, you will easily end up with 200 x 300 cm or larger.

Dining room. A different logic applies here. Chairs are pushed back when someone sits down, so the rug must follow. Allow at least 60 cm around the table. For a 90 x 200 cm table, you therefore need a rug of at least 210 x 320 cm. Smaller rugs under a dining table are quickly aesthetically distracting and practically frustrating.

Hall and bedroom. In the hallway, a runner works well: narrow, long, and durable enough to withstand daily use. Bedrooms: position the rug so that you step on it on both sides of the bed. A rug placed only at the foot of the bed is too narrow. Calculate the width of the bed plus 80 cm on each side.

What to do in case of doubt. Lay newspapers or tape on the floor and mark the size you are considering. Walk around it for two days. Almost everyone who does this chooses a larger size.

How much does a hand-woven Kelim cost?

A hand-woven Kilim made of 100% wool with vegetable dyes costs between EUR 424.95 and EUR 1,440 at Houseify. That is a significant difference, and it deserves an explanation.

The Max (EUR 424.95) and the Sven (EUR 449.95) are the entry-level models in the range. They are smaller in size, simpler in pattern, and require fewer labor hours. That does not make them any less authentic: they are still hand-woven rugs made of 100% wool. They are a good choice for a hallway, a smaller room, or as a first purchase.

The Farhad (EUR 720) and the Zakaria (EUR 990) are in the mid-range. Larger, more complex pattern, more detail in the colors. The Farhad has a geometric motif that suits both modern and traditional interiors. The Zakaria has more color layers and stands out as a centerpiece in a room.

The Soukaina (EUR 1,080) and the Samira (EUR 1,440) are the top models. The higher price reflects size, labor intensity, and the complexity of the coloring. Vegetable dyes such as indigo, pomegranate, and walnut are more labor-intensive than synthetic alternatives and yield nuanced tones that become more beautiful with age rather than fading.

Soukaina or Farhad? The two best-selling compared

Many customers hesitate between the Farhad (EUR 720) and the Soukaina (EUR 1,080). That is a real dilemma, so here is an honest comparison.

The Farhad It has a sleeker geometric pattern with fewer color transitions. It fits into interiors that already have color and need a rug that does not dominate. The size is smaller, which also makes it suitable for spaces where the Soukaina would be too large.

The Soukaina It has richer colorwork and more pattern. It is larger and fills a living room better. If you want the space to revolve around the rug, the Soukaina is the better choice. If the rug is meant to complement existing furniture, the Farhad is friendlier.

The price difference of EUR 360 is mainly due to the extra coloring and the larger size, not to the quality of material or technique: these are equivalent in both.

How do you recognize handmade work?

Whether you buy online or in a store, there are five checks that distinguish between handmade and imitation.

1. Look at the back. With a hand-woven Kilim, the back is identical to the front. Same pattern, same colors, same structure. A machine-made rug always has something on the back: seams, a coating, a different texture, or open loops.

2. Look for minor irregularities. Handmade work is not perfect. Lines that run slightly, minimal variations in knot size or line width are signs of human work. A pattern that is too perfect is a warning.

3. Feel the weight. Wool is heavier than polypropylene. A hand-woven wool Kilim measuring 200 x 300 cm easily weighs 8 to 12 kilograms. Too light means synthetic.

4. Check the fringe. In a hand-woven Kilim, the fringe is an extension of the warp, and thus an integral part of the fabric. In a machine-made rug, the fringe is often sewn or glued on afterwards.

5. Ask for origin information. An honest seller knows where the rug comes from. Iran, Turkey, or the Caucasus are the classic production areas. “Kelim style” or “Kelim look” without further explanation signals that it is not handmade.

What to avoid

The market for kilims contains a lot of misleading language. A few terms to be critical of:

“Hand-knotted Kilim” It does not exist. A Kelim is by definition plain-woven, not knotted. Knotting is a different technique (found in Persian and Berber rugs). A seller who confuses the terms either does not know themselves or is concealing the origin.

“Kelim look” or “Kilim-inspired” It is always machine-made. That is not a problem if you deliberately want a cheaper alternative, but you do not pay for handmade work if it is not stated.

Prices under EUR 200 for a rug larger than 150 x 200 cm. That cannot be a hand-woven Kelim. An experienced weaver works for weeks on a rug of that size. Below that price, it is by definition machine-made or of inferior material.

Vague origin. “Oriental style” or “ethnic look” without specifying the country and region is insufficient. Kilims have a geographical origin that determines the style, pattern, and color tradition.

Practical tips for home

Anti-slip. A thin Kelim tends to slide on smooth floors. A good non-slip underlay solves this problem and simultaneously protects the underside of the rug. Choose a mat that is slightly smaller than the rug itself so that the edge does not roll up.

Turn. Rotate the rug 180 degrees twice a year. This ensures it wears evenly and the colors fade uniformly. This is especially important in rooms with a lot of direct sunlight.

Breaking in. A new wool Kilim may shed some fibers during the first few weeks. This is normal and will stop on its own. Vacuum regularly, but with low suction and without the brush roller, as this can damage the weave structure.

Stains. Dab immediately with a clean cloth; never rub. Water and a small amount of mild soap are sufficient in most cases. Allow the rug to dry completely before replacing it.

Storage. Roll up the rug when storing it; never fold it. Folding creates permanent creases in the weave structure. Roll it with the right side out and store it in a dry, dark place.

Ready to choose?
