Can’t find the answer to your question? Feel free to email us.

About our rugs

<details>

Where do Houseify’s rugs come from?

</details>

<details>

Are your rugs really handmade?

Our Berber, Boujaad, Azilal, Beni Ouarain, Beni Mguild, Gabbeh and Persian rugs are all hand-knotted or hand-woven. This means that a weaver spends weeks or even months working on a single rug, knot by knot. Each product on our site is labelled as either handmade or machine-made, so you can always make an informed choice.

</details>

<details>

What materials do you use?

Our hand-knotted rugs are usually made from 100% natural sheep’s wool, sometimes combined with cotton for the warp (the base structure). Wool is durable, stain-resistant, flame-retardant and naturally temperature-regulating. Boucherouite rugs are made from recycled fabric, which makes them unique and sustainable. We only use synthetic materials in specifically labelled machine-woven rugs.

</details>

<details>

Are the colours natural or artificial?

Traditional Berber rugs in natural shades (white, cream, grey, brown) derive their colour from the natural hue of the wool itself. Coloured rugs are dyed using a blend of natural plant extracts and modern dyes. High-quality rugs predominantly use natural dyes that remain stable and do not run under normal use.

</details>

<details>

Why are hand-knotted rugs more expensive?

A hand-knotted Berber rug takes weeks or even months of manual labour to produce: selecting and spinning the wool, setting up the warp, and then tying tens of thousands of knots per rug. This involves craftsmanship, time and fair payment for the weaver. Machine-woven rugs can be made in a few hours and are therefore considerably cheaper. At Houseify, what you pay goes towards the rug itself, not towards retail space or middlemen.

</details>

<details>

How long does a hand-knotted wool rug last?

With normal domestic use and proper care, our hand-knotted rugs will last for decades. Hand-knotted wool rugs that are between 50 and 80 years old are still fully functional in many homes. We have such confidence in our own collection that we offer a 10-year Signature Guarantee.

</details>

<details>

Is every rug unique?

Yes. Every hand-knotted rug is a unique piece. Even within the same design, the size, colour tones and pattern may vary slightly, as weavers work from memory and tradition rather than following exact patterns. Minor irregularities are not a flaw but rather a testament to authentic craftsmanship.

</details>

Berber rugs

Would you like to find out more about our Berber collection? Take a look at our Berber rugs page with detailed information on the four main types.

<details>

What exactly is a Berber rug?

A Berber rug is a hand-knotted wool rug made by the Berber (Amazigh) peoples in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The tradition dates back thousands of years. Characteristic features include the natural wool, geometric patterns with deep symbolic meaning, and the variation across regions and tribes. Each pattern tells a story about life, fertility, protection or nature.

</details>

<details>

What are the different types of Berber rugs?

The four main types in our collection are:

Beni Ouarain: Shaggy rugs in cream or ivory with minimalist black lines, originating from the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Azilal: vibrantly coloured rugs featuring abstract patterns, often on a white background, from the region around the town of Azilal.

Beni Mguild: warm reddish-brown shades with more decorative patterns and a thick pile.

Boujaad: richly coloured rugs in bright shades of pink, orange and purple from the Boujaad region.

</details>

<details>

How can I tell if a Berber is genuine?

Look out for these features: hand-knotted (visible when you look at the back, where you can see the knots), 100% wool or wool with a cotton core, slight irregularities in pattern and size, and variations in colour depth due to natural dyes. A machine-made rug has a smooth, uniform reverse side and often contains synthetic fibres. At Houseify, we explicitly state the origin and manufacturing method for every product.

</details>

<details>

What do the symbols in Berber patterns mean?

Berber patterns are not random decorations. Diamonds often symbolise femininity or fertility, zigzag lines represent water or movement, and crossed lines signify protection. Each tribe also has its own variations. Weavers adapt these motifs to what they wish to express: a wedding, a birth, a prayer. This makes every rug a piece of documented culture.

</details>

<details>

Are Berber rugs suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes. Natural wool is an excellent insulator, but at the same time allows heat to pass through effectively with underfloor heating. Do, however, choose a rug with a pile that isn’t too thick (under 2 cm) for optimal heat transfer. Our Beni Ouarain rugs have a long pile and are therefore less suitable for underfloor heating than the shorter-pile varieties.

</details>

<details>

Are Berber rugs suitable for children and babies?

Absolutely. Natural wool is hypoallergenic, flame-retardant and, in a sense, self-cleaning (dirt remains on the surface and is easy to remove). The soft pile provides a comfortable surface to play on. However, we do recommend vacuuming newly purchased rugs more frequently during the first few weeks, as loose fibres are released which can be picked up whilst crawling on the rug.

</details>

<details>

Do Berber rugs work in modern interiors?

Absolutely. It’s precisely this combination that works so well: the warm, organic texture of a Berber rug contrasts beautifully with sleek, modern furniture and white walls. White Beni Ouarains are extremely popular in minimalist and Scandinavian interiors, whilst colourful Azilals or Boujaads add character to tranquil spaces.

</details>

Dimensions and installation

<details>

What size rug would suit my living room?

</details>

<details>

How much of the floor should remain visible around the rug?

The classic rule is to leave between 30 and 60 cm of floor space around the rug. Too little space makes the rug look cramped, whilst too much makes it appear disconnected from the rest of the room. In a standard room, aim for around 40 cm to achieve a natural balance.

</details>

<details>

What size fits under a dining table?

Choose a tablecloth that extends at least 60 cm beyond the table on each side, so that chairs remain on the tablecloth even when pushed back. For a 160 cm table, you’ll need a tablecloth at least 280 cm wide; for a 200 cm table, at least 320 cm.

</details>

<details>

What size is suitable for the bedroom?

Three options work well: a large rug (at least 240×300 cm) on which the bed and bedside tables stand, a single rug measuring 160×230 cm at the foot of the bed, or two runner-style rugs measuring 80×200 cm on either side of the bed.

</details>

<details>

What is a suitable size for the hall?

For a hallway, choose a runner: narrow and long, usually 70–90 cm wide and 200–300 cm long. Leave at least 10 cm of floor visible on both sides. Rugs in the hallway often get a lot of foot traffic, so opt for a flat-woven style (kilim, low-pile) that is easier to keep clean.

</details>

<details>

Can I put a rug on top of a rug?

Yes, that’s perfectly fine. Do make sure to use a non-slip underlay so that the decorative rug doesn’t slip. It looks particularly good to liven up a soft, plain base (such as neutral carpeting) with a hand-knotted wool rug.

</details>

<details>

Do you also offer bespoke services?

For specific sizes or colours, we can sometimes arrange for our suppliers to make rugs to order. Please note that delivery times will be longer in such cases (usually 8 to 16 weeks) and a minimum order quantity applies. Email info@houseify.com We’ll discuss your requirements and see what’s possible.

</details>

Maintenance and care

<details>

How do I care for a hand-knotted wool rug?

Vacuum regularly (once or twice a week if used frequently), preferably without a rotating brush as this can damage the pile. Turn the rug over every six months to ensure even wear. Shake or beat the rug outdoors once or twice a year. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight in one spot.

</details>

<details>

My new rug is shedding a lot of fluff – is that normal?

Yes, that is perfectly normal. New hand-knotted woollen rugs shed loose fibres during the first 4 to 8 weeks. These are remnants of the knotting process that will disappear on their own. Vacuum a little more often during this period, but not too vigorously. If the shedding is still significant after 3 months, please contact us.

</details>

<details>

How do I remove stains?

For wet stains: blot immediately with a clean white cloth (never rub, as this pushes stains deeper into the fabric). Work from the outside in. For stubborn stains, use a mild wool detergent diluted in lukewarm water. Always test on an inconspicuous area first. For wine, oil or blood: please contact us for advice specific to your type of rug.

</details>

<details>

Can I put my rug in the washing machine?

No, never. Hand-knotted woollen rugs must not be put in the washing machine. The wool may felt, the structure may become distorted and the colours may bleed. For a thorough clean, we recommend a specialist rug cleaner who has experience with hand-knotted rugs.

</details>

<details>

How often should I have my rug professionally cleaned?

Under normal conditions, once every 3 to 5 years is sufficient. If the rug is in a high-traffic area or you have pets, then every 2 years. Choose a rug cleaner that specialises in wool and natural fibres, not a general cleaner that uses steam or harsh chemicals.

</details>

<details>

Why does my rug slide across the floor?

This is a common problem, especially on smooth floors such as laminate, wood or tiles. The solution is an anti-slip underlay (also known as a backing). This is a thin mat that goes underneath your rug and prevents it from sliding. It also protects your floor from scratches caused by the rug’s backing and extends the life of your rug.

</details>

<details>

How can I prevent colours from fading?

Turn the rug over every 6 months to ensure that any discolouration caused by sunlight occurs evenly. Close the curtains during the day if the sun is strong. If necessary, use UV-resistant film on windows that shine directly onto the rug. Please note: natural wool dyed with vegetable dyes will always fade slightly over the years; this is part of the material’s living character.

</details>

Ordering and payment

<details>

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept payments via iDEAL, credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Klarna (pay later). All payments are processed via a secure connection.

</details>

<details>

Can I pay later?

Yes, via Klarna. You’ll receive the rug first and pay afterwards. Klarna applies its own terms and conditions and credit assessment, which you’ll see during the ordering process.

</details>

<details>

How do I know if my order has gone through?

Immediately after completing your payment, you will receive a confirmation email containing your order number and a summary of your order.
